Morphological Studies on Korean Lawn Grasses (Zoysia spp .)

Yeam Do-Yi
Abstract
Purpose of the present studies is to investigate morphological features of 63 wild grown Korean local grasses (Zoysia spp.) collected from various areas of Korea, and to see correlation existing among them. Results of the studies are hoped to contribute a little to the future studies and to be valuable for the practical uses of lawn grasses.
1. It was of observed that the most of Korean native lawn grasses were larger in the plant shape than those of Japan and Taiwan, especially in the number of leaf cotton hair.
2. The small shaped varieties did not flower successfully in Suweon area, and showed very poor frequency of flower formations when flowered.
3. Changes in the morphological characters of Korean native lawn grasses were illustrated by 11 representative local varieties with description of their features. Three varieties having outstanding horticultural value were given Korean varietal name.
4. The height, leaf width, and leaf blade length had highly significant positive correlation from one to another. Caryopse width had positive correlation but its length had negative correlation with other characters.
5. Number of the leaf cotton hair on the upper and low side of leaves, as a whole, showed different extent of the occurrence, while the cotton hair of the low side had positive correlation with the increase in leaf blade and height.
6. It was discussed in the paper that classification of Korean native lawn grasses (Zoysia spp.) grown wild can be systematically made.
